During the Second World War, he was an army surgeon whose leadership and care for his men was beyond heroic. He was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and was sent to the Thai-Burma railway where the men under his command received very little food, lived in terrible conditions and were sent out to work each day, no matter how sick they were. Weary did all he good to keep his camps as clean as possible and to share equally such little food as they had. He and his men invented all sorts of medical equipment out of bamboo and whatever else they could find.
