Famous People for School Students
Lachlan Macquarie (1762–1824) NEW
Lachlan Macquarie was sent to New South Wales to restore order after some of the colonists had rebelled against Governor Bligh in the infamous Rum Rebellion. Having done that, he set about bringing his vision for the colony into reality: a vision of a land of opportunity for all, even those who had arrived as convicts. He employed the convict architect Greenway to design bridges and buildings. A way across the Blue Mountains was found and Macquarie saw to it that roads were built to give access to the vast lands beyond. He left the colony a vastly improved place, but he made enemies just the same, and they made sure that the Bigge Commission came up with a report that blackened Macquarie’s name.
