Famous People for School Students
Peter Lalor (1827-1989) NEW
Peter went to Ballarat to find gold, but returned with one less arm than when he set out. Frustrated by high mining licence fees, and the brutal manner in which the police enforced them, Lalor became a key figure in the Eureka Rebellion in 1854. It was while defending the Stockade that his arm was smashed and had to be sawn off. Later, he became a member of the Victorian parliament which did not make Governor Hotham happy. Hotham accused the rebels of treason for which the punishment was death. There was just one treason trial which was enough to show that it would be impossible to gather a jury which would convict the rebels of treason.
